Ciaran hurried across the field, the revolver in his hand glinting. For once he was not smiling and enjoying the walk across the field back to his home, but instead had his head down in thought. Always check the load... Support with two hands if necessary... Stop shaking, godammit... Aim; all right, close one eye if you have to... Ciaran snorted wryly: his brother would never make a teacher. He was a man of few words and fewer emotions, yet Ciaran could not deny he had learnt a lot today. Still, he could not be but shocked at the damage his target practice had done to that beautiful birch down by the river. Imagine if it was a person...
He looked up, trying to break out of his reverie. The sun was shining high in an azure sky: it was a beautiful day to be alive. For a moment Ciaran contemplated stopping for a while just to enjoy the peace of this little corner of England. One would hardly know that far away in the south, over the famous White Cliffs of Dover, the British and the Germans clashed daily, both trying their best to slaughter and destroy. Ciaran wondered if the White Cliffs were stained red yet with the guilt of the pilots.
BANG!
No, perhaps one could not forget. Especially not his brother, home on a few short days of leave, but still insisting he practice. Then Ciaran hear a sound he had not expected: a high-pitched scream. It came from further up the field, not far from the wood, and whoever it was was plainly terrified. Ciaran hurried on, forgetful of the revolver clutched in his hand. He soon found the screamer: three girls stood together, their eyes wild with a look not unlike that of hunted beasts. Yet they did not seek to comfort each other; perhaps they had only just met. Strange... Even this far from the battle raging in the south, parents were still loth to let their children out alone lest they be kidnapped by some terrible German spy. Why were all three out alone, today of all days?
Ciaran stepped towards them. Of course, they did not know what all the shooting was in aid of; no wonder they were scared. "It's all right," he called as he neared them. Suddenly three pairs of eyes were fixed on him. He smiled gently "There's nothing to worry about - " Then it dawned on his that their eyes were not fixed on him: they were fixed on the gun glittering in his hand.
((I just realised this RP started off in the present tense. Oh well, reply in whatever tense you want, I guess. And I really didn't intend this piece to be this long, I promise.))
